How to Make Your Home Furnace and Heat Pump Filter Last
The service life span of a furnace and a heat pump can be between 15 to 20 years. Monthly changing or cleaning of the filter in any HVAC equipment is necessary and beneficial. Insufficient filter changes usually result in poor system performance, poor comfort, higher bills, more frequent repairs and early system failure. It is important to check them at least every month during peak use, and replace it when it looks dirty enough to block the air flow. Remember that some filters, such as media filters or electronic air cleaners are washable and others are disposable and need to be replaced. Some also need to be custom ordered, so always plan ahead!
Your furnace is a heat exchanger that transfers the heat from the gas burners to the air that flows through your system. If you see cracks or holes, these are signs you need to replace your furnace immediately. These issues are usually caused by dirty air filters and years of usage. Additionally, if your heat pump is approaching 10 years or more and major components such as the compressor, reversing valve, accumulator or outdoor coil have gone bad, you should replace instead of repair.
In most cases you can’t repair your Heat Pump on your own. Keep in mind that your heat pump has a 240 volt circuit and you can be severely shocked or electrocuted. Always have a local Colorado Springs HVAC dealer service professional take a look at it and determine what service is needed or, if it is more cost effective, to replace it.
